Applications of Membrane Separation Technologies for Water, Energy, Environment

Membrane separation technology has been applied to various industrial processes. Some of them become mature and were successfully commercialized, such as fresh water recovery by reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, microfiltration and etc. However, many other membranes and membrane processes are still being developed to overcome problems such as high cost and low performance. For instance, membrane distillation is a promising technology to recover fresh water from brine and harvest energy from low grade heat source. Currently, membrane distillation is still in its infancy. Membranes with low pore-wetting, good antifouling performance as well as membrane contactors with high mass transfer performance need to be developed. These are also the common key features related to other membrane separation process, such as solvent extraction, wastewater treatment, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), membrane humidification & dehumidification and etc.

In recent years, the development of the relative technology is fast. The aim of this special issue is, therefore, to collect papers intending to solve those common bottleneck problems of various membrane technologies individually or as a hybrid process. All technologies aiming for improving the performance of membranes and the separation processes driven by hydraulic, osmotic, or thermal pressure along with other biochemical technologies are considered as the nexus framework of water-energy-environment.

Topics may include, but are not limited to,

Ø freshwater treatment (FO/PRO/RO/UF/MF/ED/hybrid membranes)

Ø membrane distillation

Ø membrane recovery of reusable wastewater

Ø catalytic membranes

Ø extracorporeal membrane oxygenation

Ø innovative design of membrane contactors

Ø innovative testing method of membrane performance and etc.

Authors are invited to submit their original research works, literature reviews, and short communications prepared on the application of various state-of-the-art membrane technologies on those topics.

It tries to create a collection of rigorous research articles and insights on advancement of membrane separation technology that harvests water and energy.
