Water, food and energy are traditionally managed in a linear ‘take-make-use-dispose’ way. As a result, our resources have been depleted rapidly associated with population exploration, fast urbanization and climate change. The circular economy as a promising approach toward sustainable development has attracted considerable interest among scientists and policy-makers from governments and companies, in terms of sharing, recovering, repairing, reusing, and recycling used and/or waste resources and products. Advanced separation and purification technologies play an essential role in the transformation to the circular economy. Numerous separation materials and processes have been developed to recover the valuable resources from various wastes (e.g., wastewater, waste gas, waste heat and solid waste).
This special issue calls for a more critical discussion on how advanced separation and purification technologies can contribute to a circular economy towards sustainability. The aim of this special issue is to create a collection of rigorous research articles, review papers and perspectives on a variety of resource recovery technologies towards the circular economy. We encourage researchers to submit high-quality manuscripts to demonstrate the key roles of advanced separation and purification technologies in the transformation to the circular economy.
Papers are invited on all relevant topics, including, but not limited to
Water recovery from waste or polluted liquid or gas streams, e.g. pure water production from wastewater, and water recovery from humid flue gas;
Nutrients recovery from waste streams (e.g., wastewater);
Precious metals recovery from solid or liquid wastes;
Advanced separation materials for resource recovery (e.g., membranes and adsorbents);
Innovative and/or hybrid processes for resource recovery; and
Life cycle cost analysis/life cycle assessment of the resource recovery technologies in circular economy practices.

Manuscript submission information:
When submitting your manuscript please select the article type “VSI: Resource recovery”. Please submit your manuscript before the submission deadline.
All submissions deemed suitable to be sent for peer review will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. Once your manuscript is accepted, it will go into production, and will be simultaneously published in the current regular issue and pulled into the online Special Issue. Articles from this Special Issue will appear in different regular issues of the journal, though they will be clearly marked and branded as Special Issue articles.

Separation and Purification Technology is a journal dedicated to the dissemination of novel methods for separation and purification in chemical and environmental engineering for homogeneous solutions and heterogeneous mixtures. This includes any separation and/or purification of liquids, vapors and gases, with the exception of methods intended for analytical purposes. Soil science, polymer science and metallurgy are outside the scope of the journal.
