Applied Thermal Engineering disseminates applied novel research about the development and demonstration of components, equipment, technologies and systems involving thermal processes for the production, storage, utilization, and conservation of energy. Example topics include:

Components and equipment such as heat exchangers, heat pumps and refrigeration plants, heat pipes, combined heat and power and advanced alternative cycles, polygeneration, combustion processes applied in thermal systems, heat transfer enhancement as applied to the above, and other unit operations involving thermal engineering processes.

Renewable and clean energy technologies such as solar thermal power plants, the integration of renewable energy with conventional processes, thermal management of fuel cells and batteries, and other alternative solutions for improving resource efficiency and reducing emissions.

Component through to system design covering energy use in both the process and power industries, and in buildings, including passive thermal design techniques.

Economic assessments of thermal engineering projects, and the financial implications of component, equipment, technological and system design.

The Journal publishes high-quality original research papers and review articles from established researchers. In addition, the Journal also publishes the following invitation-only essays (with a two-page limit and a maximum of 10 references allowed):

  • Cutting-edge or recent innovations in research
  • News and views about recent advances or issues of interest to the thermal engineering community
  • Commentaries about a recent scientific publication, a general scientific issue, or a policy of broad interest
